178-182 Baldwin Street appears to have been constructed in 1887 and first occupied in 1888. 

 

178-182 Baldwin Street were formerly known as 38-42 Clyde Street and 48-52 Clyde Street.  

 

All 3 of the houses have had ground floor commercial storefront additions added on post-construction. 



As of 1888, the residents of 178-182 Baldwin Street were: 

 

178 Baldwin Street:  John S. Burton - a travelling representative / salesman of A. Allan & Company. A. Allan & Company (Alexander A. Allan) was a wholesale seller of hats, caps, and furs which was based at 51 Bay Street. 

 

180 Baldwin Street: George L. Davis - a travelling representative / salesman of Smith & Keighley. Smith & Keighley was a wholesale grocer based at 9 Front Street East, Toronto. 

 

182 Baldwin Street: Jackson Latchford and S. J. McLoud. Jackson Latchford was a manager at the Williams Manufacturing Company. Williams Manufacturing Company produced sewing machines and was based at 58 King Street West, Toronto.  Unfortunately no further information is available at present regarding S. J. McLoud.
