Josephine Eaton Burnside, Timothy Eaton’s eldest daughter, purchased the Humewood estate near Avenue and St. Clair in 1928, having it remodelled by architects Burden and Gouinlock in the Georgian Revival style. In 1915 Josephine and her daughter were on the ill-fated Lusitania, struck by a German U-Boat off the coast of Ireland, killing her daughter Iris and maid Martha. Josephine lived out her life at Humewood, dying in 1943 and leaving the estate to the Mothercraft Society, before it was sold to the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce as a staff training facility.
